It is fairly clear to me that my struggles with sexual addiction as a teenager were directly tied to my experiences being sexually abused as a child. From the age of three on, I knew far more about sexuality than I should have, mostly based on an understanding that can only come through practice. Unfortunately, what I understood to be true was all wrong. Sure, doing certain things creates certain responses and everything works. (more…)

I have recently begun to turn my passion for film into a blog of reviews about the movies I see. I have often wanted to reach into the screen and prevent a character from doing something stupid. You just know they’re going to do it and you can’t fathom what is in their heads when they do it.
Whether going into a dark room where you, the viewer, know that a terror awaits them, or saying “yes” to a con man, people in movies do really stupid things. The funniest part for me is that even when I’ve seen a film with such moments of decision, I still think that by yelling at the character on the screen, I can change the course of the plot. (more…)

After reading my essay, An Equal Harm, someone asked me to define what I meant by Acting Out, Recovery, and Acting In. Although, I think the essay illustrates the differences fairly well, it is probably true that I need to break them down more.
To me, these concepts are the very essence of the gospel. They embody everything from obedience to free agency to salvation and exaltation. They are all about the purpose of life and changing from fallen man into a disciple of Christ. (more…)

A few years ago, I worked in a facility for adolescent sex offenders as an intern and candidate for my Bachelors degree in Social Work. I had been chosen for the position because I already had many years experience working developmentally disabled people.
In that facility was a developmentally disabled inmate that the staff was not having any success with when it came to cooperation and behavior problems. As a student, I had almost no official power when it came to treatment and custody issues. I was not qualified to offer therapy and not trained to guard. (more…)

The home page for Clean-LDS quotes President Gordon B. Hinckley as saying, “Pornography, with its sleazy filth, sweeps over the earth like a horrible, engulfing tide. It is poison. Do not watch it or read it. It will destroy you if you do. It will take from you your self-respect. It will rob you of a sense of the beauties of life. It will tear you down and pull you into a slough of evil thoughts and possibly of evil actions. Stay away from it. Shun it as you would a foul disease, for it is just as deadly (General Conference, Gordon B. Hinckley, Some Thoughts on Temples, Retention of Converts, and Missionary Service) .” (more…)

It is tempting, when trying to solve a difficult problem, to spend a lot of time thinking about its solution. Human beings have a tremendous capacity for thinking through a puzzle. Not only do we have our own powers of reason, but we also have the combined knowledge gained over our history as a species. We have science, philosophy, psychology, and even politics to shape and form the way we look at problems.
The temptation is to look to these things first and for some, that is all there is. They do not accept faith as a source of truth. Yet for many others, like me, faith is the first and foremost place I look when I encounter a problem.

Mosiah 3:19: For the natural man is an enemy to God, and has been from the fall of Adam, and will be, forever and ever, unless he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit, and putteth off the natural man and becometh a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord, and becometh as a child, submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father. Yesterday, I had a good experience in Gospel Doctrine class. The subject was the book of Job. I had many opportunities during the hour to reflect on the role of suffering and opposition in my life. There came a moment when the teacher asked for someone to read Job 19:25–27. I raised my hand and quoted it. This scripture has meant so much to me in my life and I’ve had it committed to memory for a long time. (more…)
